2026 College Football Power Rankings — Week 8: Ohio State Takes No. 1, BYU Surges After Notre Dame Upset

Week 7 delivered the kind of chaos that can redefine an entire college football season. Georgia lost at home to Auburn. Notre Dame fell in a thriller at BYU. Tennessee overwhelmed Alabama, Florida stunned Texas, and Ohio State ended Indiana’s remarkable winning streak. By Saturday night, the national championship picture looked dramatically different.

Ohio State emerges as the new No. 1 team in the TFE Times Power Rankings after defeating Indiana on the road, although a significant quarterback injury complicates its championship outlook. BYU makes the week’s biggest move among the leading contenders, climbing eight positions after defeating Notre Dame, while Miami survives Florida State in double overtime to remain undefeated and claim the top spot in the AP poll.

But not every upset deserves the same reaction. Georgia’s narrow loss does not erase its impressive résumé, just as Notre Dame’s defeat against an elite BYU team does not suddenly make the Fighting Irish ordinary.

The TFE Times Power 25 measures current team strength, recent performance, opponent quality and championship potential—not merely records or AP poll positions.

With Week 7 complete, the question is straightforward: Who are the best teams in college football right now?

1. Ohio State Buckeyes (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 3 | Previous TFE: No. 3 ↑ 2

Ohio State takes over the top position after defeating Indiana 19–15 on the road in arguably the weekend’s most consequential Big Ten matchup. The Buckeyes ended the Hoosiers’ 22-game winning streak, with Jeremiah Smith delivering a pivotal 38-yard touchdown reception. Winning a physical contest against a proven championship-caliber opponent gives Ohio State the strongest immediate claim to No. 1.

However, the victory came at a significant cost. Quarterback Julian Sayin suffered an injury to his throwing arm in the fourth quarter, and coach Ryan Day expects him to miss several weeks. Ohio State’s defense remains elite, but uncertainty at quarterback could threaten its hold on the top position.

2. BYU Cougars (6–0)

AP Rank: No. 2 | Previous TFE: No. 10 ↑ 8

No team improved its national championship credentials more dramatically than BYU. The Cougars defeated Notre Dame 28–24, delivering one of the program’s most significant victories in decades and establishing themselves as genuine contenders.

Quarterback Bear Bachmeier accounted for touchdowns passing, rushing and receiving, showcasing extraordinary versatility against elite opposition. BYU’s undefeated record now comes with the signature victory its résumé previously lacked. An eight-position jump reflects both the magnitude of the result and the team’s expanding offensive possibilities.

3. Miami Hurricanes (6–0)

AP Rank: No. 1 | Previous TFE: No. 4 ↑ 1

Miami survived a remarkable 43–35 double-overtime battle against Florida State, preserving its undefeated season. Quarterback Darian Mensah threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, while Malachi Toney delivered 154 receiving yards and two touchdown catches.

The Hurricanes deserve considerable credit for responding under pressure, particularly after falling behind in the second half. However, allowing 35 points to a struggling Florida State team raises legitimate defensive questions. Miami tops the AP poll for the first time since 2002, but Ohio State and BYU produced more convincing evidence of elite strength this weekend.

4. Georgia Bulldogs (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 5 | Previous TFE: No. 1 ↓ 3

Georgia suffered the weekend’s most shocking defeat, falling 27–24 at home to Auburn on a last-second field goal. Quarterback Gunner Stockton’s three turnovers proved costly, and the Bulldogs failed to impose their customary control over an opponent they were expected to beat.

Nevertheless, Georgia’s earlier victory at Alabama remains an important measure of its ceiling. One narrow rivalry loss should not erase the Bulldogs’ broader accomplishments. Their championship potential remains substantial, but the turnover problems and failure to close out Auburn demand a meaningful reassessment.

5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 4 | Previous TFE: No. 2 ↓ 3

Notre Dame’s 28–24 defeat at BYU was damaging, but context matters. The Fighting Irish lost on the road against an undefeated opponent that now owns one of the strongest victories in college football.

Notre Dame remained competitive until the final moments, reinforcing its status among the nation’s elite despite the setback. The Irish fall three places because other contenders strengthened their cases, not because their overall talent suddenly diminished. Their margin for error in the playoff race, however, has narrowed.

6. Ole Miss Rebels (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 7 | Previous TFE: No. 8 ↑ 2

Ole Miss delivered one of Week 7’s most impressive performances, dismantling Missouri 31–3. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss helped establish control early, and the Rebels’ defense prevented a ranked SEC opponent from developing any meaningful offensive rhythm.

The 28-point margin is particularly significant because Missouri entered as a credible conference contender. Ole Miss now possesses compelling evidence of its ability to dominate quality competition rather than merely survive close games. That performance earns the Rebels a position immediately outside the Power Five.

7. Texas Tech Red Raiders (6–0)

AP Rank: No. 8 | Previous TFE: No. 11 ↑ 4

Texas Tech reinforced its unbeaten credentials with a convincing 53–25 victory over Arizona State. Scoring 53 points against a Big 12 opponent demonstrated the offensive firepower that makes the Red Raiders increasingly difficult to dismiss.

Unlike several prominent contenders, Texas Tech avoided the mistakes that defined Week 7. The Red Raiders combined explosive production with a comfortable winning margin, strengthening their conference championship outlook. Their challenge now is proving that this consistency translates against the Big 12’s strongest opposition.

8. Indiana Hoosiers (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 6 | Previous TFE: No. 6 ↓ 2

Indiana’s 22-game winning streak ended with a 19–15 home loss to Ohio State, but the result should not trigger an exaggerated decline. The Hoosiers pushed one of the nation’s strongest teams into a four-point contest.

Indiana’s defense kept the game competitive, even as the offense struggled to generate enough scoring opportunities. The narrow defeat illustrates how little separates several leading Big Ten contenders. The Hoosiers remain dangerous, although Ohio State now holds the decisive head-to-head advantage.

9. Tennessee Volunteers (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 11 | Previous TFE: No. 14 ↑ 5

Tennessee delivered a defining statement with its 26–10 victory over Alabama. The Volunteers held the Crimson Tide to just 10 points, demonstrating defensive resilience and controlling the game as it progressed.

Running back DeSean Bishop helped Tennessee establish momentum in the second half, while the defense repeatedly frustrated Alabama’s offense. The result carries enormous SEC implications and establishes Tennessee as a serious playoff contender. Few teams improved their standing more convincingly against high-quality opposition.

10. UCLA Bruins (6–0)

AP Rank: No. 9 | Previous TFE: No. 12 ↑ 2

UCLA maintained its undefeated season with a 17–7 victory over Wisconsin, relying on defensive execution rather than offensive fireworks. Limiting a Big Ten opponent to one touchdown demonstrated the Bruins’ ability to control a game without needing explosive scoring.

The narrow offensive output prevents UCLA from climbing higher, but the team’s consistency deserves recognition. Its earlier victory over Oregon provides additional credibility. UCLA increasingly looks like a disciplined contender capable of winning through multiple styles.

11. Utah Utes (6–0)

AP Rank: No. 10 | Previous TFE: No. 13 ↑ 2

Utah escaped Colorado with a 27–24 victory, preserving its undefeated record in a difficult conference road environment. The Utes demonstrated resilience, although the three-point margin exposed vulnerabilities against an opponent outside the national rankings.

Utah’s physical identity and consistency remain important strengths. Still, its latest performance was less convincing than the dominant victories recorded by Ole Miss and Texas Tech. The Utes remain firmly in the Big 12 championship conversation but need a stronger statement against elite competition.

12. Kentucky Wildcats (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 12 | Previous TFE: No. 17 ↑ 5

Kentucky strengthened its SEC credentials with a 21–13 road victory over Oklahoma. The Wildcats’ defense forced four turnovers, repeatedly disrupting the Sooners and preventing them from establishing offensive consistency.

Winning in Norman represents an important step for a program attempting to establish itself among the conference’s strongest teams. Kentucky’s offensive ceiling remains a question, but its ability to win through defensive pressure and disciplined execution deserves recognition. A five-position climb is justified.

13. Alabama Crimson Tide (5–2)

AP Rank: No. 13 | Previous TFE: No. 5 ↓ 8

Alabama’s 26–10 defeat at Tennessee was one of the weekend’s most concerning performances. The Crimson Tide struggled offensively and failed to produce the sustained scoring drives necessary to challenge a physical conference opponent.

Combined with the previous loss to Georgia, Alabama’s second consecutive defeat raises questions about offensive consistency and its ability to compete with the SEC’s best. The roster still possesses considerable talent, but championship potential must be supported by current performance. An eight-place drop reflects that reality.

14. Houston Cougars (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 14 | Previous TFE: No. 20 ↑ 6

Houston secured an important 35–32 victory over Oklahoma State, demonstrating the ability to win a competitive conference matchup against a nationally ranked opponent. The Cougars delivered enough offense to overcome a persistent challenge.

The result strengthens Houston’s position within the Big 12, although allowing 32 points suggests the defense remains vulnerable. Houston’s trajectory is nevertheless encouraging. Its rise reflects an improving résumé and a valuable head-to-head victory over another team competing for national recognition.

15. LSU Tigers (5–2)

AP Rank: No. 18 | Previous TFE: No. 21 ↑ 6

LSU produced one of Week 7’s most emphatic defensive performances, shutting out Mississippi State 31–0. The Tigers controlled the matchup from start to finish and prevented a previously ranked opponent from scoring a single point.

That result represents meaningful progress for a team seeking consistency against SEC competition. LSU’s two losses remain relevant, but the shutout provides stronger evidence of its defensive ceiling than several narrow victories elsewhere in the rankings. The Tigers deserve a substantial promotion.

16. Iowa Hawkeyes (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 15 | Previous TFE: No. 15 ↓ 1

Iowa remains a credible Big Ten contender, supported by a strong defensive foundation and a disciplined approach to game management. The Hawkeyes did not produce one of Week 7’s defining ranked victories, leaving other teams with stronger recent evidence to move ahead.

A one-position decline reflects the increasingly competitive middle of the Power 25 rather than a significant reassessment of Iowa’s capabilities. Its challenge is developing enough offensive production to consistently threaten the conference’s leading programs.

17. USC Trojans (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 16 | Previous TFE: No. 16 ↓ 1

USC remains positioned within the national conversation at 6–1, with its offensive potential providing a credible foundation for continued contention. However, the Trojans lack the fresh signature result delivered by several teams moving upward this week.

The slight decline is primarily a consequence of improved performances elsewhere. USC’s opportunity to climb depends on translating its talent into victories against stronger Big Ten competition. The Trojans remain dangerous, but their place among the elite is not yet established.

18. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 17 | Previous TFE: No. 22 ↑ 4

Wake Forest delivered a commanding 41–7 road victory over California, producing one of the weekend’s most complete performances. The Demon Deacons controlled the scoreboard and demonstrated a level of separation rarely achieved in conference road games.

The 34-point margin strengthens Wake Forest’s credentials considerably. Although California does not carry the same weight as an elite ranked opponent, the decisive nature of the victory deserves recognition. Wake Forest’s upward trajectory makes it an increasingly interesting ACC contender.

19. Texas Longhorns (4–2)

AP Rank: No. 19 | Previous TFE: No. 7 ↓ 12

Texas suffered another damaging setback, losing 27–24 at home to Florida. The Longhorns have now dropped consecutive games to unranked opponents, an alarming development for a program recently considered a national championship favorite.

The talent remains substantial, but repeated failures to close games cannot be overlooked. Texas’s decline is the largest among teams remaining in this week’s rankings. Its upcoming matchup with Ole Miss offers an immediate opportunity to reverse the narrative, but current performance no longer supports a top-ten position.

20. Florida Gators (5–2)

AP Rank: No. 20 | Previous TFE: Unranked — New

Florida enters the Power 25 after stunning Texas 27–24 on the road. Freshman quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. helped engineer the upset in his first start, providing an important spark against a talented SEC opponent.

The victory represents a significant improvement in Florida’s national standing. The Gators still need to demonstrate greater week-to-week consistency, but defeating Texas in Austin provides a stronger recent achievement than many teams near the bottom of the rankings can claim.

21. Missouri Tigers (5–2)

AP Rank: No. 22 | Previous TFE: No. 9 ↓ 12

Missouri suffered a severe setback in its 31–3 loss at Ole Miss. The Tigers generated almost no meaningful offensive production and were unable to respond after falling behind early.

The magnitude of the defeat is especially troubling because Missouri entered with legitimate SEC ambitions. One loss does not erase its earlier accomplishments, but a 28-point defeat against a conference rival demands a substantial correction. Missouri must restore offensive efficiency before it can reenter the championship conversation.

22. Boise State Broncos (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 21 | Previous TFE: No. 23 ↑ 1

Boise State remains an important contender outside the traditional power-conference structure. Its 5–1 record and position in the national poll reflect a program capable of competing for a meaningful postseason opportunity.

The Broncos receive a modest promotion as several teams above them suffered significant setbacks. However, without a comparable Week 7 signature victory, Boise State does not warrant a dramatic climb. Continued consistency and stronger opponent-adjusted performances will determine whether the Broncos can move higher.

23. SMU Mustangs (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 23 | Previous TFE: No. 24 ↑ 1

SMU defeated Virginia 23–13, using a disciplined defensive performance to secure another ACC victory. Holding the Cavaliers to 13 points allowed the Mustangs to maintain control without requiring an especially explosive offensive showing.

The victory reinforces SMU’s reliability, although Virginia’s record limits its value as a national statement. The Mustangs move up slightly because they handled their responsibilities while several competitors struggled. Their ceiling will become clearer against stronger conference opposition.

24. Northwestern Wildcats (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 24 | Previous TFE: No. 25 ↑ 1

Northwestern survived a difficult road contest against Michigan State, winning 24–21. The Wildcats demonstrated composure in a close Big Ten matchup and preserved their place among the nationally ranked teams.

The narrow margin against a struggling opponent limits the significance of the result, but winning conference road games remains valuable. Northwestern’s disciplined approach has produced a strong start, even if its underlying profile remains less convincing than that of the leading Big Ten contenders.

25. Arizona Wildcats (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 25 | Previous TFE: Unranked — New

Arizona enters the TFE Power 25 following another week of upheaval near the bottom of the rankings. The Wildcats’ 5–1 record provides a foundation for inclusion, particularly as Oklahoma State and Mississippi State suffered damaging defeats.

Arizona’s placement remains provisional. The Wildcats have not yet established the same level of opponent-adjusted strength as the leading Big 12 teams, but their season-long consistency earns them the final position. Stronger performances against quality conference opponents would justify further advancement.

The Power Five

Week 7 fundamentally reshaped the championship race. Five programs now stand above the field in the TFE Times rankings, although the separation between them is narrower than it appeared a week ago.

1. Ohio State: The Buckeyes own the weekend’s defining Big Ten victory, combining defensive discipline with the ability to defeat elite opposition on the road. Julian Sayin’s injury, however, introduces the most significant uncertainty facing any team in the top five.

2. BYU: The Cougars possess one of the nation’s strongest signature victories after defeating Notre Dame. Bear Bachmeier’s versatility gives their offense a distinctive dimension.

3. Miami: The Hurricanes remain undefeated and possess exceptional offensive playmakers. Their resilience is undeniable, although defensive consistency remains a concern.

4. Georgia: The Bulldogs’ loss to Auburn exposed vulnerabilities, but their earlier accomplishments and overall talent preserve their championship credentials.

5. Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish remain an elite team despite losing at BYU. Their ability to compete against top opposition keeps them firmly in the national picture.

The most important conclusion from Week 7 is that no program appears invulnerable. Ohio State has earned the top position through its victory over Indiana, but the loss of Sayin could significantly change the balance of power. BYU has emerged as a genuine championship threat, while Miami now carries the expectations accompanying the AP’s No. 1 ranking. Georgia and Notre Dame remain capable of challenging anyone.

With conference races intensifying and playoff positioning becoming increasingly consequential, Week 8 promises another revealing test of which contenders can turn championship potential into championship performances.
