The demand for specialists in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) disciplines grows with every passing year. Our society is extremely dependent on tech and its rapid progress, which means that it needs more and more specialists in these fields all the time. If you want to succeed in this line of work, you have to teach yourself to look at every problem from a variety of different viewpoints, analyze mutually exclusive solutions, and anticipate the consequences of your potential decisions.
A person willing to study STEM disciplines and build a career in this line of work has to be able to quickly adapt to changing circumstances. This means not just the ability to solve problems using unconventional approaches, but also the ability to deal with situations using solutions that take a view of the bigger picture. For example, a truly adaptable person is ready to look for assistance with his/her homework if he/she feels that he/she is incapable of dealing with it on his/her own. If you cannot communicate your ideas effectively and are incapable of interacting with other human beings in an agreeable manner, you will have a hard time landing a job – or even getting through college in the first place.
Studying STEM disciplines is hard. Even if you have a natural aptitude for math or programming, when you study these subjects at an advanced level, sooner or later you are bound to run into a wall. You will find it incredibly hard to progress. You will feel like you do not understand anything. You will feel like there is an insurmountable gap between yourself and those who actually have any chances of finding decent jobs in your field. If you are inclined to give up easily and are discouraged by failures and lack of forwarding movement, STEM disciplines will be extremely challenging to deal with. To succeed in them, you have to be ready to spend huge amounts of time without any visible progress, work hard without having much to show for it for prolonged periods, keep going when everything seems hopeless.
It does not matter how well you manage to memorize things and understand the rules governing how your discipline works. If you are unable to make conclusions based on the information you learned and create something new out of what you have at your disposal, you will never be anything beyond mediocre. To succeed in STEM fields, you do not just have to know how to solve problems and apply the rules you have learned. You have to be able to do it in ways you were not taught. You have to be able to take the information you have at your disposal and make something completely new out of it.
As you can see, studying STEM disciplines with any hope of achieving future success in these fields is a challenging path. You have to choose wisely whether you want to follow it. However, if you decide that it is the right solution for you, you can improve the qualities you need to be the best you can possibly be in these fields.
