2026 College Football Power Rankings — Week 7: Georgia Takes No. 1 as Texas Falls, Notre Dame Surges and UCLA Shocks Oregon

Week 6 delivered the kind of upheaval that can reshape a college football season. Texas lost its grip on the top spot after a stunning Red River defeat to Oklahoma. Georgia emerged from Tuscaloosa with a statement victory over Alabama. Notre Dame dismantled Stanford, UCLA shocked Oregon, and Kentucky handed LSU another damaging loss.

The result is a dramatically different national picture. Several established contenders suddenly have questions to answer, while teams that entered the season outside the championship conversation are beginning to look like genuine threats.

The TFE Times College Football Power Rankings are not a reproduction of the Associated Press Top 25. These independent rankings evaluate which teams appear strongest right now, weighing recent performance, quality of competition, roster strength, quarterback play, and the trajectory of each program. Records matter, but they do not tell the entire story.

With Week 6 complete, here are the 25 best teams in college football heading into Week 7.

1. Georgia Bulldogs (6–0)

AP Rank: No. 1 | Previous TFE: No. 3 ↑

Georgia takes the top spot after delivering the weekend’s most significant victory, a 20–17 road win over Alabama. In a game decided by physicality, defensive execution, and late-game composure, the Bulldogs demonstrated the qualities of a national championship favorite. Gunner Stockton managed the offense while Georgia’s defense recorded four sacks against a dangerous Crimson Tide attack.

The Bulldogs had already built an undefeated record, but questions remained about their relatively favorable early SEC schedule. Those questions look considerably less pressing now. Winning in Tuscaloosa gives Kirby Smart’s team the strongest argument for No. 1, and Georgia enters Week 7 looking like the country’s most complete team.

2. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6–0)

AP Rank: No. 2 | Previous TFE: No. 6 ↑

Notre Dame delivered one of Week 6’s most emphatic performances, crushing Stanford 58–7. The Fighting Irish overwhelmed their opponent on both sides of the ball, demonstrating an offensive explosiveness and defensive discipline that few programs have matched consistently this season.

The quality of opposition keeps Notre Dame narrowly behind Georgia, but its current form demands serious consideration at the top of the rankings. An undefeated record, increasingly convincing performances, and a balanced roster make the Irish a legitimate championship threat. Their upcoming encounter with BYU provides an opportunity to validate that standing against stronger competition.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 4 | Previous TFE: No. 2 ↓

Ohio State responded to the pressure of the national race with a convincing 45–16 victory over Maryland. Quarterback Julian Sayin threw four first-half touchdowns, helping the Buckeyes establish control well before the final whistle. The offensive efficiency was particularly encouraging for a team still developing its identity after an early-season defeat to Texas.

That loss remains relevant, but it should not obscure how formidable Ohio State looks today. The Buckeyes have the offensive firepower, defensive talent, and overall roster quality to compete with anyone in the country. Their upcoming showdown with undefeated Indiana offers a chance to establish themselves as the Big Ten’s premier team.

4. Miami Hurricanes (5–0)

AP Rank: No. 3 | Previous TFE: No. 4 ↔

Miami was idle in Week 6, meaning the Hurricanes neither strengthened nor weakened their championship credentials on the field. Their previous 41–13 road demolition of Clemson remains an important indicator of their ceiling, particularly because it demonstrated their ability to dominate a recognizable conference opponent away from home.

The Hurricanes retain a place among the nation’s elite because their combination of athleticism, defensive talent, and offensive potential remains compelling. However, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Ohio State all produced meaningful Week 6 results. Miami holds at No. 4 in the TFE rankings, with its next opportunity to make a statement still ahead.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 6 | Previous TFE: No. 5 ↔

Alabama suffered its first defeat, falling 20–17 to Georgia in one of the season’s most consequential SEC matchups. The Crimson Tide struggled to generate consistent offensive momentum against Georgia’s defensive front, but they remained competitive until the final stages against an opponent now ranked No. 1 nationally.

A three-point loss to the country’s strongest team is not grounds for an automatic collapse in a power ranking. Alabama’s preceding 56–23 road victory over Mississippi State demonstrated its offensive ceiling, and the Crimson Tide still possess the talent to challenge the nation’s best. The margin for error has narrowed, but their championship potential remains intact.

6. Indiana Hoosiers (6–0)

AP Rank: No. 5 | Previous TFE: No. 7 ↑

Indiana escaped Lincoln with a 20–17 victory over Nebraska, preserving its undefeated record in a demanding road environment. Quarterback Josh Hoover threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, while receiver Nick Marsh delivered a spectacular performance with 187 receiving yards and both scoring receptions.

The Hoosiers deserve credit for finding a way to win without their most convincing offensive performance. Nevertheless, their narrow victory exposes questions about how consistently they can control games against stronger opponents. Indiana remains an elite contender, but its upcoming matchup with Ohio State will provide a substantially clearer measurement of its national standing.

7. Texas Longhorns (4–1)

AP Rank: No. 7 | Previous TFE: No. 1 ↓

Texas experiences the week’s most significant fall near the top after Oklahoma delivered a stunning 27–24 upset in the Red River Rivalry. Arch Manning threw two costly interceptions, including a late turnover that helped position Oklahoma for Tate Sandell’s game-winning 47-yard field goal. The defeat revealed troubling offensive inconsistency from a team previously considered the nation’s strongest.

The Longhorns retain considerable credibility because of their earlier victory over Ohio State, and one rivalry defeat does not erase their underlying talent. Nevertheless, power rankings must reflect current performance. Texas has now demonstrated vulnerabilities that its leading championship rivals are increasingly capable of exploiting.

8. Ole Miss Rebels (4–1)

AP Rank: No. 9 | Previous TFE: No. 9 ↑

Ole Miss produced one of the weekend’s more convincing SEC performances, overwhelming Vanderbilt 52–17. The Rebels established offensive control and avoided the kind of prolonged inconsistency that has undermined several other nationally ranked teams.

Their lone defeat prevents a move into the highest tier, but the Vanderbilt performance reinforces the argument that Ole Miss belongs among the country’s stronger offensive teams. The Rebels move ahead of several undefeated programs because their present offensive ceiling appears especially dangerous. Sustaining that efficiency against the SEC’s better defenses will determine how far they can climb.

9. Missouri Tigers (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 13 | Previous TFE: No. 8 ↓

Missouri delivered an impressive 27–6 victory over Texas A&M, controlling the game through physical offensive execution and disciplined defense. Running back Jamal Roberts rushed for 222 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries, repeatedly punishing the Aggies and allowing the Tigers to dictate the tempo.

Although Missouri slips one place because of movement elsewhere, the Tigers’ underlying outlook has arguably improved. Their decisive victory provides stronger evidence of SEC competitiveness than several teams above them in the AP poll currently possess. The next challenge is establishing that this performance represents a sustainable level rather than an isolated breakthrough.

10. BYU Cougars (5–0)

AP Rank: No. 8 | Previous TFE: No. 11 ↑

BYU continued its undefeated campaign with a 24–10 victory over Iowa State. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier was particularly influential, producing 329 passing yards and 109 rushing yards. His ability to create offense through both dimensions gives the Cougars a valuable weapon against increasingly demanding opposition.

BYU’s unbeaten record warrants respect, but its narrower victories make it difficult to place the Cougars among the country’s most dominant teams. That could change immediately: a meeting with Notre Dame offers the kind of high-quality opponent that can transform a promising résumé into a championship-level statement.

11. Texas Tech Red Raiders (5–0)

AP Rank: No. 10 | Previous TFE: No. 12 ↑

Texas Tech enjoyed a Week 6 bye, maintaining its undefeated record while other contenders encountered serious difficulties. The Red Raiders’ position improves slightly because several teams previously ahead of them suffered defeats, not because Tech added another significant victory.

The Red Raiders remain one of the Big 12’s most intriguing contenders. Their ability to combine offensive production with increasingly credible defensive play gives them an attractive ceiling, but tougher conference opponents must establish whether their undefeated start translates into championship-caliber strength.

12. UCLA Bruins (5–0)

AP Rank: No. 12 | Previous TFE: No. 22 ↑

No team makes a bigger leap in the TFE rankings than UCLA. The Bruins traveled to Oregon and stunned the Ducks 17–15, demonstrating resilience in a difficult road environment. The victory was not an offensive masterpiece, but winning a tight contest against a highly regarded opponent provides meaningful evidence of competitive strength.

UCLA’s undefeated record now includes a victory that fundamentally changes how the program should be evaluated. The Bruins still need to demonstrate more consistent offensive production before entering the championship conversation, but their ten-place rise is thoroughly deserved.

13. Utah Utes (5–0)

AP Rank: No. 11 | Previous TFE: No. 13 ↔

Utah maintained its undefeated start with a convincing 41–24 victory over Kansas. The Utes demonstrated the offensive capability necessary to complement their traditionally physical approach, creating separation against a conference opponent rather than allowing the contest to become a late-game struggle.

The challenge for Utah is translating those performances into evidence against the Big 12’s strongest contenders. Its consistency merits a position near the national top ten, but the impressive recent victories by Missouri and UCLA give those teams a slightly stronger argument for immediate upward movement.

14. Tennessee Volunteers (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 14 | Previous TFE: No. 15 ↑

Tennessee earned a hard-fought 24–17 road victory over Arkansas, proving capable of winning without overwhelming offensive production. The Volunteers handled a competitive conference environment and avoided a costly upset, an important accomplishment during a weekend when several more highly regarded teams stumbled.

Tennessee remains dangerous because of its offensive potential, but its uneven performances leave questions about consistency against elite defenses. The upcoming matchup with Alabama should be particularly revealing. A victory would immediately elevate the Volunteers into the national championship discussion.

15. Iowa Hawkeyes (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 17 | Previous TFE: No. 18 ↑

Iowa delivered a commanding 41–24 road victory over Washington, showing an offensive dimension that makes the Hawkeyes considerably more threatening. Running back Kamari Moulton rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Ethan Brown contributed 251 passing yards and three scores.

The Hawkeyes’ physical identity remains evident, but their ability to generate explosive offensive production could transform their ceiling. Iowa’s earlier defeat to Ohio State remains a limitation on its résumé, though its latest performance suggests a team improving at precisely the right moment.

16. USC Trojans (6–1)

AP Rank: No. 19 | Previous TFE: No. 19 ↑

USC strengthened its national credentials with a 31–23 road victory over Penn State. The Trojans handled an imposing environment and produced enough offensive execution to overcome a recognizable Big Ten opponent, improving their record to 6–1.

The victory moves USC upward because winning difficult conference road games matters, particularly when several comparable programs failed to deliver. The Trojans remain outside the highest tier until their week-to-week consistency improves, but their ability to prevail in important matchups is becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss.

17. Kentucky Wildcats (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 15 | Previous TFE: Unranked — New

Kentucky enters the TFE Power 25 after a dramatic 35–34 overtime victory over LSU. The Wildcats have now won consecutive overtime contests by identical scores, demonstrating an unusual ability to survive high-pressure situations against difficult SEC competition.

Two consecutive narrow victories are not proof of dominance, but defeating LSU establishes Kentucky as more than an early-season curiosity. The Wildcats possess a stronger recent signature result than many teams near the bottom of the rankings. Their next task is establishing greater control earlier in games.

18. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4–1)

AP Rank: No. 16 | Previous TFE: No. 16 ↓

Mississippi State had an opportunity to reassess following its 56–23 defeat to Alabama and was idle during Week 6. The Bulldogs remain nationally relevant, but the scale of that loss exposed considerable defensive vulnerabilities against high-end opposition.

Their position reflects a combination of earlier promise and unresolved concerns. Mississippi State possesses the potential to compete with respectable SEC opponents, yet its most meaningful recent test demonstrated a substantial gap between the Bulldogs and the league’s strongest programs.

19. Oklahoma State Cowboys (4–1)

AP Rank: No. 18 | Previous TFE: No. 20 ↑

Oklahoma State defeated UCF 42–28, generating enough offense to overcome a competitive first half. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns, providing the passing production necessary for the Cowboys to maintain control.

The Cowboys continue to demonstrate offensive upside, though surrendering 28 points to UCF underscores concerns about their defensive ceiling. Oklahoma State belongs in the top 20 on current form, but the quality of its upcoming conference performances will determine whether a more ambitious ranking becomes justified.

20. Houston Cougars (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 20 | Previous TFE: No. 21 ↑

Houston continued its promising campaign with a 35–16 victory at Kansas State. The Cougars handled their road assignment convincingly, improving to 5–1 and reinforcing their credibility within a competitive Big 12 landscape.

Their biggest remaining challenge is establishing a signature victory over a nationally ranked opponent. Houston has demonstrated enough consistency to warrant a top-20 position, but a stronger strength-of-schedule argument would be necessary to push much higher. Its upcoming meeting with Oklahoma State offers exactly that opportunity.

21. LSU Tigers (4–2)

AP Rank: No. 22 | Previous TFE: No. 10 ↓

LSU suffered another damaging defeat, losing 35–34 in overtime to Kentucky. The Tigers demonstrated enough offensive capability to remain competitive, but their inability to secure the victory raises serious questions about their reliability in critical moments.

A 12-place fall reflects the mounting evidence that LSU is not currently performing like a top-ten program. The Tigers retain considerable roster talent and the potential to reverse their trajectory, but reputation cannot outweigh results indefinitely. Their championship outlook has become substantially more complicated.

22. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 21 | Previous TFE: Unranked — New

Wake Forest enters the rankings following an impressive 38–14 road victory over NC State. The Demon Deacons demonstrated offensive efficiency and defensive control, turning a potentially challenging conference matchup into a comfortable victory.

Their 5–1 record reflects a program developing meaningful momentum. Wake Forest does not yet possess the résumé necessary for a top-15 position, but the convincing road performance provides an encouraging indication that its success can translate against stronger competition.

23. Boise State Broncos (5–1)

AP Rank: No. 23 | Previous TFE: No. 23 ↔

Boise State survived a 38–31 victory over Fresno State, maintaining its strong record while revealing vulnerabilities on defense. The Broncos generated enough offense to win, but the narrow margin limited their opportunity to climb.

The Broncos remain a credible contender outside the power conferences, though the gap in résumé quality makes comparisons against higher-ranked teams difficult. More convincing defensive performances will be necessary to establish that Boise State can consistently challenge stronger national opposition.

24. SMU Mustangs (4–1)

AP Rank: No. 24 | Previous TFE: No. 24 ↔

SMU did not play during Week 6, leaving the Mustangs’ 4–1 record intact. With several teams earning meaningful victories, the absence of a new result limits the argument for moving them higher.

The Mustangs remain capable of competing in the ACC race, but their position near the bottom of the Power 25 reflects the need for more convincing evidence against high-quality opponents. Offensive potential alone is insufficient to separate SMU from the increasingly competitive group of teams fighting for national recognition.

25. Northwestern Wildcats (4–1)

AP Rank: No. 25 | Previous TFE: Unranked — New

Northwestern earns the final position after defeating Ball State 45–14, continuing an encouraging start under David Braun. The Wildcats delivered a decisive performance rather than simply escaping against inferior opposition, improving to 4–1.

The challenge is the quality of competition. Northwestern has established itself as a legitimate Big Ten participant, but it still needs stronger conference victories to justify a move into the upper half of the national rankings. For now, its continued progress is sufficient to earn the final spot.

The Power Five

The five teams that currently appear strongest in the country.

1. Georgia Bulldogs

The strongest current combination of résumé, defensive execution, and big-game performance. The victory at Alabama sets Georgia apart.

2. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Irish possess tremendous momentum, offensive balance, and an undefeated record. Their dominant Week 6 performance strengthens their championship credentials.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes

An explosive offense led by Julian Sayin and a talented roster make Ohio State dangerous regardless of its earlier loss.

4. Miami Hurricanes

An undefeated contender whose road destruction of Clemson remains one of the season’s more convincing performances.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama falls short against Georgia but remains talented enough to challenge anyone. A narrow loss to the nation’s best does not eliminate its championship potential.

The distinction between the top five and the rest of the country is becoming clearer, although not necessarily permanent. Indiana, Texas, and Ole Miss remain credible challengers, and Week 7 offers multiple matchups capable of changing the national hierarchy again.

For now, Georgia owns the country’s most compelling statement victory. Notre Dame is closing quickly, Ohio State is finding its offensive rhythm, Miami remains unbeaten, and Alabama retains the talent to reverse its recent disappointment.

The national championship race is far from settled. But heading into Week 7, these are the five programs that look best equipped to win it.
