5 Facts about Algeria


1. In Algeria, the largest country in Africa and 35th in world population, women make up 70% of the country’s lawyers and 60% of its judges, as well as dominating the field of medicine. Increasingly, women are contributing more to household income than men. 60% of university students are women.


2. The Algerian national anthem was first written in blood on a prison cell wall by an Algerian revolutionary who was imprisoned by the French colonial regime


3. In 1961, the French Police attacked a demonstration of Algerians on a Paris bridge. In the aftermath, many of the wounded were intentionally thrown into the Seine River and left to drown by authorities; 70-200 died.


4. A magician by the name of Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin was asked by Louis-Napoleon to suppress a possible rebellion in French-controlled Algeria using his magic tricks, and he succeeded in doing so.


5. Over a million Europeans were captured and sold as slaves in North Africa. The practice was finally terminated with the French conquest of Algeria in 1830.
